Frequently Asked Questions
We use towels during the treatment and require that you keep your underwear on. However, you can bring a pair of shorts if you feel more comfortable. Stretchy underwear is best, especially if we are treating legs.
The frequency of your sports massages depends on your personal experience. With time, you will recognise how often you need a massage to feel at your best.
If you are unsure, you can ask your massage therapist for a recommendation.
Many athletes receive daily sports massages. Ultimately the frequency will depend on your time and budget.
Typically overuse injuries are caused by repetition, which occurs in everyday life, not just during sports.
Before beginning treatment, we will discuss your day to day activities to find potential causes for your injury. We can often recommend simple solutions to help you prevent further damage. Generally, making a few small changes can have a significant effect on your wellbeing. We will then use massage to treat your problem.
The majority of the treatment is hand-on. However, we want to help you, so we will gain as much information from you to work out the problem.
Before the massage, we ask you for a brief history of any injuries or ailments. We will also ask you about your sports goals and if you have any event deadlines. Additionally, we may ask you to do some standing tests and review your posture – this is done while you are dressed.
Yes and no. If you are crawling off the couch trying to get out from under the therapist’s elbows, then NO, it should not feel like that. When too much pressure is applied and causes undue pain, your natural response is to tense up. This means the therapist is now treating your voluntary muscle tension and not the problem area – Exit stage left and find someone who will care for your muscles as much as you do.
So when should sports massage hurt? Pain is a personal emotion; everyone tolerates pain differently. A therapist should be sensitive to this and regulate their techniques to get the tissue to respond to the treatment. In some instances, getting that tissue to respond may be a little sensitive, but it should not be unbearable. However, never feel wrong to shout if you are struggling to unclench your teeth – you know your pain tolerance better than we do, and we are always happy to ease up a little.

We require 24 hours notice if you want to avoid paying for a session you can’t make. Why do we do this? For two reasons, firstly, there are others who may be desperate to get in to see us; this period allows us to get them in for a session. The second is our livelihood; when we can’t fill a slot, we still have overheads to pay, we lose money and other potential new clients. This notice period is an industry-standard for doctors, physios and most other medical practices.
There is no “best” time to have a sports massage, everyone differs in their needs and responds differently to treatment. After you have attended a few massages, you will begin to recognise the best time for you.
